As coal is forged through pressure over time, Drummond Company has experienced triumph and tumult as it grew from a small local mining operation into one of the largest privately held companies in the United States.
Heman Edward Drummond’s first mining experience came at the DeBardeleben Coal Company, where he worked as a young man. In 1935, determined to support his family, he started his own business on a 240-acre tract he had inherited from his mother, which contained a coal outcrop. With little more than a wagon, a wheelbarrow, and the family mule, Ol’ Tobe, he began hauling and selling coal.
As his business grew, Heman’s generosity extended beyond his own household. He was known to quietly support neighbors in need — even stopping in town to buy shoes for children who didn’t have any.
Over the decades, Drummond Company endured challenges while adapting to changing markets, investing in responsible mining practices, and supporting employees and communities. The values Heman instilled at the company’s founding in 1935 — hard work, integrity, and care for people — remain at the center of everything we do today.
